Newcomer Yoon Jong Bin helms
The Unforgiven, a military thriller that not only marks the filmmaker's feature length
directorial debut, but takes a deeper look at the inner workings of South Korea's armed forces and the folly of blind allegiance!
Utilizing an inventive flashback structure, this mystery film centers on Seung Young (Seo Jang Won), a young college student
who begins his compulsory military service only to soon discover that an old classmate is his commanding officer! Recognizing
his former school chum, Sergeant Tae Jeong (Ha Jeong Woo, from
She's On Duty) takes Seung Young under his tutelage,
but the cocky rookie refuses to go along with the status quo, purposely resisting any attempt to force him to adopt the mindset
considered necessary for military service. Things take a turn when Seung Young begins to treat a new recruit named Ji Hoon
(played by the director himself) differently, soon finding that his actions will have dramatic consequences for all those
involved!
Considering the film's reputation as the winner of the FIPRESCI and NETPAC awards at the 2005 Pusan Film Festival, it may
be surprising for viewers to learn that The Unforgiven is, in fact, a full-length graduation thesis film from undergraduate
director Yoon Jong Bin! A smash success at the festival, Yoon's military mystery takes an honest, unflinching look at the
men who serve in the South Korean army – those who learn how to adapt, and those who do not...with stunning results!
Will Seung Young survive his stay in the military? Unravel the truth in The Unforgiven, a stunning debut film from
a director on the rise!
