Ikeda Toshiharu returns to the forefront of Japanese genre-filmmaking with this complex and intriguing serial killer
movie. The director of
Evil Dead Trap and
Angel Guts brings us the story of Yasunaga (Toyokawa Etsushi), a cold
and methodical serial killer who impales his victims with a pair of scissors (the English title of the movie is
The Man
Behind The Scissors). Together with his female accomplice Chinatsu (Kumiko Aso), he is able to successfully evade capture
by Higuchi Koji's police detective.
However, when their next intended victim is found dead, the two killers realize that there is a copycat on the loose who
might just get them caught! Their only hope is to find out who it is before the police crack the case.
More restrained than Ikeda's previous efforts, Hasami Otoko is surprisingly bloodless for a serial killer movie,
but instead spends its time twisting and turning the plot to leave the audience guessing until the very end.
